Compressor non-synchronous vibration is a fluid-structure interaction that involves strong coupling of unsteady aerodynamic forcing of blades, usually near stall, with their vibration modes. In some circumstances NSV appears to show characteristics of part-span rotating stall and may 'lock-in' to vibration modes and may cause damaging response amplitudes. In other cases, NSV appears to have characteristics more closely aligned to flutter. Despite several decades of research through the aeromechanics academic and industrial communities, a clear method to avoid NSV does not yet exist.
