The increase in consumer demand for electric vehicles (EVs) has led to increased consumption of rare earth elements (REE) being required for electric motors (e-motors) and hence mining and extraction of these materials have increased. 95% of electric vehicles (EVs) use traction motors based on REE, such as Neodymium iron boron (NdFeB). Inevitably as the demand for EVs increases, the need to source REE's will increase with global consumption projected to reach 70kt/year by 2030\.However, the use of REE-based motors within EVs presents two main issues: (i) Environmental impact is high as they are extracted and refined using environmentally damaging processes and (ii) they are usually found in locations with high geopolitical risks, such as China (~60% of global supply), which impacts security of supply and cost.This project will enable the partners to accelerate the development of electric vehicles (EVs) with a truly low environmental impact, by transforming the way traction motors are designed, free from REEs.
