Complex magnetic nanostructures can be effectively fabricated from ferrofluids via photolithography and allow for novel nano-scale geometries, properties, and applications. We propose a new generation of ferrofluids [1] with highly ordered Barium Hexaferrite nano-platelets suspended in ethylene glycol which can be locally polymerized by two-photon lithography and create highly dense and complex three-dimensional nanostructures with embedded magnetic properties. These unexplored nanostructures with flexible geometries and magnetic properties are developed in Cardiff and subsequently could lead to novel ferromagnetic spin textures forming the basis of next generation device architectures, directly manufactured from suspension. The student will receive training on nano-material synthesis utilizing the advanced manufacturing and characterisation facilities at the School of Engineering. The student will also be trained in cutting-edge high-resolution 3D-lithography, scanning probe microscopy, and magnetometry and develop expert level knowledge in device fabrication/characterisation
