This PhD will focus on using experimental aerodynamics, such as wind tunnel testing, and computational fluid dynamics to gather data for the development of piezoelectric synthetic jet actuators. Synthetic jet actuators have the potential to be implemented on the surfaces of aircraft to delay flow separation whilst in flight, thereby reducing the total drag force on the aircraft. The successful addition of synthetic jet actuators to aircraft design carries a variety of benefits such as reduced fuel consumption, which ultimately decreases the environmental impact of the vehicle.
