This project forms part of a team developing an automated process development platform for use in the pharma industry. The work will address the monitoring, control, and self-optimisation of multiphasic (gas-liquid-solid) continuous flow chemical reactions, using novel reaction calorimetry and spectroscopic methods for rapid kinetic and thermodynamic determination. The experimental data will be used in combination with new predictive, in-silico, methods to facilitate improved process development, helping reduce cost, waste, and improve productivity and quality. The project involves AstraZeneca Process Development Department and will train a high calibre student in skills needed at the chemistry and process engineering interface that are increasingly sought by the chemical producing sector.
