This thesis will investigate the role of flânerie in Iranian cinema to understand how the politics ofspace - in terms of gender, class, tradition, and modernity - are represented, negotiated, resisted,and projected back onto Iranian social worlds and beyond. As Iranian women take to the streets toprotest the compulsory hijab and patriarchal culture in a revolutionary movement called "Woman,Life, Freedom,", female flânerie has taken on a dangerous and radical nature. This research willexamine how and why political struggles, feminist activism and flânerie combine in Iraniancinema. It will do this to reveal the depth of meaning that informs and explains contemporaryprotest and the affined aesthetic praxis of flânerie that appears throughout World cinema but takeson a very particular kind of political currency in the context of Iranian cinema and life.
