Maritime Gaels: a Social History of Labour in West Highland and Hebridean Fishing Communities, 1790-1914

Maritime activity in the Scottish West Highlands was transformed from the late 18th century as the state and private landowners intervened directly through 'Improvement' programmes. Highland Clearances scholarship has largely ignored the existence of those compelled into culturally stigmatised labour on shore or at sea. This project will adopt the approach of the 'new Highland history' - social history from below, interdisciplinarity and case-studies - lacuna. It will integrate labour history, gender history and landscape archaeology to explore the consequences of the coming of waged labour to the West Highlands: the lives, workscapes, status and relationships of maritime Gaels.
