Composing Between Traditions: Combining Sri Lankan and European Musical Cultures

The aim of this research project is to explore and employ a variety of compositional techniques to create pieces that successfully combine Sri Lankan and Western music idioms. My research will produce several original compositions, written for a variety of ensembles consisting of both Western and Sri Lankan traditional instruments. This exploration is threefold: 1) to research how to successfully combine diverse musical languages and an ensemble of both Western and South Asian instrumentalists / vocalists, 2) to research methods of notating a broad range of South Asian music for performers who read Western notation, and 3) to address issues of musical exoticism and challenge the "othering" of non-Western musical traditions through the categorisation of all such music under the umbrella term 'world music'.
