This project will examine the resurgence of the long sentence in contemporary Anglo-American fiction as a stylistic, narrative, and formal response to the pressures of neoliberalism, hypersaturation of media, resurgent fascism, and anthropocentric climate change. A fundamental unit of narration across any written medium, the sentence has been the site of modernist and postmodernist literary experimentation as well as a subject of disciplinary and philosophical enquiry. This project will function as the first history of the long sentence, as well as analysing the atomising factors of its contemporary iteration.
