Left behind? Investigating the relationship between social exclusion, proposed triad of populist radical right attitudes and the rejection of perceive

The populist radical right (PRR) is a loosely organised international school of thought that has in recent years seen an upswing in political influence in the United Kingdom. The increasing popularity of PRR parties and policies has multiple potential impacts, from the legitimisation of far-right attitudes to, at the extreme, violnet radicalisation. While numerous traits and sociodemographic variables have been linked to PRR support, none has been shown to singularly identify adherents with high accuracy. This porject will therefor go beyond individual differences to investigate which ideological positions unite PRR adherents in the UK. While definitions vary, three cultural ideologies appear particularly relevant in modern British PRR discourse: nativism, social conservatism and anti-elitism. A new questionnaire will be created in phase one of the research, and principal axis factor extraction conducted to identify the items that most typify each hypothesised PRR pillar. The resultant instrument can be utilised to identify individuals scoring highly across PRR ideological dimensions. In the second phase, a series of survey choice experiments will investigate whether the experience of social exclusion has an exacerbating effect on the impact of PRR ideologies on patterns of rejection of the three out-groups identified above, with treatment groups experiencing exclusion. As the UK continues to experience societal flux, this project will afford crucial insights into the potential exacerbating effect of social exclusion on attitudes towards the out-groups commonly stigmatised in PRR messaging, providing insights that can help facilitate interventions aiding societal depolarisation.
