Following the paradigmatic work of Shannon Miller, scholars have generally agreed that seventeenth-century women writers primarily engaged with the Fall of Adam and Eve due to the questions it raises about gender hierarchy, patriarchy, and marriage. My thesis seeks to make a significant intervention in this conversation, arguing that the remit of their interests cannot be so narrowly circumscribed, and that we need to pay equal attention to their engagements with the Fall's implications for theological and philosophical questions of language, grace, and epistemology. Through examining the poetic work of Lucy Hutchinson, Mary Roper and Hester Pulter, I will position various genres of poetry-epic, biblical verse paraphrase, and lyric-as each offering unique opportunities through which to meditate on these diverse and complex theological issues.
