Carboxylation is a fundamental reaction in organic chemistry. We are heading a program for developing novel reagents for carboxylation reactions (for a recent publication see: Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2023, DOI: 10.1002/anie.202218371). These reagents are described as dual-function reagents as they can perform multiple roles in the reaction. The advantage of our dual-function reagents is that they avoid specialized equipment and sensitive/hazardous reagents. These reagents also display unique reactivity. The project will begin with a focus on carboxylation chemistry but will provide the successful candidate with an opportunity to express their creativity in other areas of organic synthesis, for example sulfur chemistry and amide bond formation. The successful candidate will also gain experience in isotope labeling with an aim to develop collaborations with experts from academia and industry.The successful candidate will acquire skills in synthetic organic chemistry, organometallic chemistry and catalysis. Within this, the candidate will be exposed to a range of technologies, such as photochemistry and electrochemistry. Analytical techniques, both experimental (NMR, CV, UV-Vis, kinetic analysis) and computational will be used. Candidates will be encouraged to present their research at both national and international conferences.
