People with self-harm often feel that cliniciansmisunderstand their experiences, focusing on stoppingbehaviours to achieve clinical recovery. The Self-HarmRecovery Model (SHRM), developed from a review ofcurrent evidence, examines self-harm recovery accordingto people with lived experience. Differently to clinicalrecovery, it shows the process as a "push and pull"between carrying out and reducing/stopping self-harm actsand influenced by factors like coping methods to replaceself-harm and whether people receive sympathetic supportfrom others. However, the evidence does not examinethoughts to self-harm, its links with people's identity andits meaning. Therefore, further research is needed to fullyunderstand self-harm recovery and refine the SHRM. I willconduct interviews with 1) people aged 18-35 with self-harm experiences and 2) clinicians who care for peoplewith self-harm. The interviews with people will help usunderstand how self-harm recovery is experienced and willdevelop the SHRM. The interviews with clinicians will helpus understand if the SHRM is appropriate for clinicalpractice. This study is led by a nurse with experience ofworking with self-harm and personal history of self-harm.People with a history of self-harm will form a LivedExperience Advisory Panel (LEAP) to contribute to theproject. I will ensure safety throughout by considering thewellbeing of people taking part in interviews and LEAPmembers are supported.
