英文摘要
Taking Scottish academics as a separate social group, this project will analyse divergent, yet co-existing, masculine practices at universities in St Andrews, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Edinburgh between 1560 and 1606: a period where significant changes across Scotland resulted in major transformations for these institutions and their role in society. Using gender theory, it will take a new approach in analysing how Scottish masters performed their roles and how they impacted students. It will demonstrate how academic masculinities interacted, and how they influenced wider Scottish society and related to European movements, whilst providing insight into gender practices at universities today.
