Since I realized I wanted to pursue a PhD, I pushed towards obtaining as much research experience aspossible. In my 2nd year I chose to do a UROP, researching the electrophysiological response of flies whenexposed to a deformation of their visual field during flight. Collaborating with the PDRA and PhD students, Ihelped develop a new platform to acquire electrophysiological data. Drawing on their expertise I sought tounderstand the complex biological phenomena involved and expand on my engineering skills. Thisexperience was so fulfilling that, when some personal and mental health issues lead to me having to takean interruption of studies, I chose as part of my recovery to take on an additional summer research projectduring which I helped develop a new type of optical system called a spatial filter beam expander. Tacklingthis project independently, I made enough progress that my supervisor believes we can publish this work ina journal like Optics Letters or Scientific Reports. Finally, during my final year project I will be designing andbuilding a system to detect bioweapons using stand-off Raman spectroscopy, and will give me a head startin the skills, techniques and topics required to succeed in this field.Outside of my academic and research time, I enjoy spending time as a teaching assistant and in one-to-onetutoring sessions. I also enjoy sports and travelling, which are an endless source of inspiration and ideas.I find the applications of such basic principles such as light, sound and waves into a practical, life-savingsituation fascinating. By taking part in the Smart Medical Imaging Centre for Doctoral Training, I believe Ican put my wide interdisciplinary skills together with the training provided by the course to develop of abioimaging technique
