Solar power is an established and sustainable method for powering IoT devices, which in many cases eliminates the need for the periodic replacement of batteries. There has been extensive research on ideal placement of solar panels in high-power residential and commercial installations; however, there has been limited research on the low-power end of the spectrum in non-ideal locations. For example, an internet connected crane hook cannot be powered through conventional means and solar power would be ideal, however it spins and twists so ideal panel placement (always pointing south) is impossible. Currently, there is no significant research on power conditions in non-ideal positions as manufacturers only provide power statistics for their cells in ideal test conditions.
