The project aims develop the scientific base and expertise necessary to establish new remote optical frequency metrology capability, e.g. linking Scotland to the national frequency standards at NPL. This project sits at the interface between the National Timing Centre (NTC) and the UK Quantum Technologies programme. The iCASE project aims to extend the capabilities of a prototype node for timing and frequency distribution located in Glasgow by adding optical frequency metrology expertise for evaluating emerging products based on quantum technologies (laser systems, other clock components and systems) and ultimately lead to better performance for the end users from next generation of atomic clocks. By providing new capabilities for remote clock comparisons it will particularly align with ongoing work on atomic clocks at Strathclyde as part of the Quantum Technologies Hub programme in Sensing and Timing. The iCASE project will enable initiation of new work on establishing robust schemes for remote frequency comparisons. This project will provide the student with the opportunity to work within a world-class research team developing and disseminating the frequency comparison technology needed to support the next generation of clocks. This will provide opportunities for publication in high-impact journals & research presentations at international conferences, as well as providing the student with a deep understanding of optical frequency metrology. The student will gain a wide range of skills in optics, lasers, electronics and programming, all of which will equip them well for a future career in photonics / quantum technologies. The studentship builds on a longstanding collaborative relationship between the Strathclyde research group and the NPL Time and Frequency division. This particular iCASE studentship will enable us to build upon a newly established collaborative activity (initiated within the NTC programme) within the wider strategic engagement between NPL and Strathclyde.
