Due to the payload and range requirements, current battery technology have some limitations for heavy-duty vehicle applications. Hydrogen and fuel cells seem a viable option supported by "UK Hydrogen Strategy" in achieving Net-Zero carbon for such applications. Fuel cells use hydrogen and produce on-demand electricity, but energy loss is involved through the heat dissipation. This energy can be recovered for producing useful power. It is especially important for large vehicles with fuel cell range of a few hundred kW where small percentages of waste heat recovery (WHR) will make a significant amount of useful energy. However, WHR from fuel cells will have its own challenges such as recovering the low-grade waste heat. Therefore, this aims to increase the efficiency of the fuel cell technology through waste heat recovery. Objectives will involve:- Developing a validated model of the fuel cell system- Powertrain design of the selected case study vehicles using the validate model of the fuel cell- Design and integration of different WHR options for the selected case study vehicles- Optimisation of the total efficiency with respect to the fuel cell, WHR and vehicle performance parameters
