My research will examine the portrayal of human-soil interactions in speculative fiction, responding to a well-documented need for new forms of dialogue and expression around human-soil futures. Using a practice-led approach in combination with analytical modes from literary criticism, creative writing and the natural sciences, I will reflect on interconnections between soils and human culture in the context of scholarship on trans-corporeality, posthumanism, and differentials of scale. These reflections will be further explored through a new, novella-length work of speculative fiction which seeks to recontextualise soil for the Anthropocene.
