Understanding crystallisation processes in metal oxides

Layered transition metal oxides (LTMOs) show polymorphism and a range of micron-scale morphologies. This project will seek to understand the factors which control the nanoscale crystallisation processes in templated combustion synthesis, and how the nucleation goes on to affect morphology and function. LTMOs have a number of applications including in sodium ion battery cathodes, high mobility electronics (through control of the 2D morphology) and transparent materials. The project will investigate crysallisation processes through the use of e.g. in situ heating XRD and TEM, and will aim to make use of central facilities such as Diamond and ISIS.
