With the rapidly developing field of quantum computation and technologies, there is a growing requirement for generation, detection and logical manipulation of photons and photonic states to be incorporated with integrated circuits (ICs). Quantum technologies require high numbers of on-chip photon sources and photon detectors, in the order of hundreds of thousands to millions, to carry out high level computation and large-scale logic topologies. There is therefore a demand for improvement on the miniaturisation, scalability and performance of integrated quantum photonics. In particular, photon sources that are able to generate entangled and coherent photons with high fidelity are imperative to effective implementation of such quantum computational technologies. Development of integrated photonics towards large scale wafers would allow future applications in manufacture of quantum logic circuits on a level similar to that seen in the more traditional electronics-based computation technologies that are prevalent in the modern world.
