I am undertaking, with Sarah Davies (Durham), a joint project, which aims to reconstruct Stalin's worldview, primarily on the basis of his recently declassified private papers. We have focused on Stalin's writings on the following key issues: The leader cult and Stalin's role in the political system; the nature of the new socialist society; Soviet culture; the nature of 'Bolshevik leadership'; the capitalist West; internal enemies and the use of terror.
