This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Brain metabolism is being studied using double labelled 13C-14N-glutamine to label TCA cycle metabolites including citrate, fumarate and succinate, in addition to TCA by-products including aspartate, glutamate, phenylalanine and tyrosine as well as alanine and lactate. Cells were treated with dopamine and dopamine agonits to study the effects of dopamine on citotoxic events in the cells. Additional measurements of citrulline and arginine will be performed as a indication of Nitric oxide metabolism and labeling of purine nucleotides with 14N (as glutamine is an immediated precursor of these nucleotides) will make possible the measurements of nucleotides in extracted cells.
