XAS DATA ACQUISITION AND ANALYSIS SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Significant work has been completed on the conversion of SSRL¿¿s Instrument Control software (ICS) to become Operating System independent, and to migrate the SSRL Data Acquisition Software (XAS-Collect and other programs) to the new platforms. The new software can be run on the OpenVMS, Linux (UNIX) and Microsoft Windows (XP and 2000) operating systems. It is anticipated that the new ICS software will be used as the primary interface between control hardware and data collection software on the new beam line 7-3, commissioning of which is expected to commence February 2006. The software provides backward compatibility and a computer system has been procured to run the legacy software until such a time as other XAS beam lines have been converted. XAS utility software, such as the GePlus software for control of detectors and routines for optimization of beam lines and electronics (captured under XASUTILS) are in particular also being converted for use with Microsoft Windows. Significant progress was also made in the design and development of a dedicated beam line network. Specifically, a dedicated firewall machine was purchased, a Fortinet Fortigate 1000. This firewall machine will be installed as a ¿¿fail-over¿¿ partner to the existing Fortigate 1000 firewall that already protects the SPEAR and Injector control systems. In addition, progress was made to the design of the Virtual Local Area Networks, or VLANs, that the firewall will provide. It is anticipated that beam line 7-3 will be the first beam line to take full advantage of the new network architecture.
