This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. This is a study of cardiac risk factors in patients genetically pre-disposed to diabetes or with existing type 2 diabetes. Patients will be recruited from a population of patients who have already completed a cardiac catherization, and they will be placed into 6 groups based upon family history, presence of obesity based upon BMI, and results of an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). This protocol will perform a detailed CV risk profile on non-diabetic and type 2 diabetic subjects by history, physical examination, and laboratory measurement, including assessment of insulin sensitivity using the insulin clamp technique. The extent of cardiovascular disease will be further studied by MRI of the carotid arteries and descending aorta. The coronary arteries will also be assessed by angiographic findings.
