This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The purpose of this study is to explain the higher prevalence of high blood pressure and its complications in blacks than in caucasians. The hypothesis to be tested is that blacks have increased activity of the renin-angiotensin system in hormones in their kidneys, which is determined by genetic factors.
