This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. This is an NIH-funded mycology research unit designed to isolate and study the genes and gene products in Candida that are responsible for its adherence to endothelial cells. The nursing staff of the PCRC screen all patients and identify eligible participants for cord harvesting. The nursing staff gathers and processes the cords to obtain the endothelial cells which are then plated. The nursing staff then follows specific protocol guidelines to insure proper storage of the cords and cell samples.
