Somatostatin is a 14-amino-acid peptide hormone that has many functions in endocrine homeostasis, including inhibiting the release of growth hormone and suppressing glucagon and insulin secretion. It is found in high concentrations in brain tissue, the gastrointestinal tract, and the pancreas. A variety of tumors express receptors for somatostatin and its analogs; the prevalence of these receptors varies among different tumor types. The neuroendocrine class of tumors demonstrates a high prevalence of somatostatin receptors. Octreotide is a synthetic analog of somatostatin developed to overcome the short circulating half-life of somatostatin (2-4 minutes). OctreoScan (indium In-111 pentetreotide) is a radiolabeled analog of octreotide approved in the United States and Europe for the scintigraphic localization of primary and metastatic neuroendocrine tumors bearing somatostatin receptors. This study specifically addresses the evaluation of the effect of age (geriatric) and renal function on the safety, efficacy and pharmacokinetic profiles of OctreoScan in this patient population at the recommended clinical dose.
