This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. This study is being performed to assess the interaction between two medications, iron and mycophenolate mofetil, which are frequently used in kidney transplant recipients. A large portion of the transplant population, particularly renal allograft recipients, experience anemia requiring iron supplementation. In a recent research study performed in normal healthy volunteers, it was observed that mycophenolic acid levels (the marker for the drug mycophenolate mofetil in the blood) were significantly lower when taken with an iron supplement. Twenty patients representative of the stable outpatient renal transplant population will be recruited. This study is designed to determine the extent and magnitude of this interaction under several conditions: 1) when iron is taken at the same time as mycophenolate mofetil; 2) when iron is taken two hours after mycophenolate mofetil; 3) this study will also examine the effects of interaction with immediate release and sustained release iron products. The results of this study may provide information that will better direct the use of these medications in the transplant population.
