This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. This study will investigate the physiology of depression induced by administration of IFN-a for the treatment of hepatitis C infection. The general hypothesis is that patients who develop depression while receiving IFN-a will demonstrate changes in nighttime core body temperature, basal metabolic rate, sleep patterns, and cytokine levels (IL-6, IL-1a/b, and TNFa), when compared with two control groups: IFN-a treated hepatitis C patients who do not develop depression and hepatitis C patients who are without depression and have not been started on IFN-a.
