TREATMENT OF CYSTIC FIBROSIS PATIENTS WITH ANTIOXIDANT SOLUTION: A PILOT STUDY

In cystic fibrosis (CF), pancreatic insufficiency and a diminished bile acid pool cause malabsorption of important nutrients and dietary components leading to poor nutritional status and oxidative stress. Of particular significance is the malabsorption of fat-soluble nutrients and antioxidants, which are important for normal immune and neurological function. Furthermore this malabsorption limits effective supplementation of CF patients with lipophilic nutrients and antioxidants such as essential fatty acids, beta-carotene and vitamin E, which may provide benefits when supplied at levels higher than those obtained from normal diets. An oral liquid formulation, which can form micelle-like vehicles, can be used to overcome the malabsorption of these nutrients in CF patients. This study will test the efficacy of this formulation in increasing the plasma levels of certain nutrients and antioxidants and evaluate the reduction in oxidative stress parameters in 20 patients with CF.
