MORTALITY AND MORBIDITY RELATED TO GASTRIC BYPASS SURGERY

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. This project focuses on the long-term health of individuals who have and have not undergone gastric bypass surgery for treatment of obesity. Two groups of participants, those anticipating gastric bypass surgery and those not planning surgery (control group), report to the GCRC for testing. All participants undergo the following tests: a complete pulmonary evaluation to measure the volume and function of the lungs; an echocardiogram to measure heart size and function; an exercise treadmill test to measure fitness; an overnight sleep disorder screening to test for sleep apnea or other sleep disorders; a resting metabolic rate test to determine resting metabolism; a blood draw and urinalysis; an impedince test to measure percent body fat; a blood draw and urinalysis; blood pressure monitoring and anthropometric measurements to determine body shape. In addition, participants complete a number of questionnaires related to exercise and diet while at the GCRC. The GCRC nutrition staff is scoring all dietary related reports.
