This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. This multidisciplinary proposal will investigate the efficacy of both standard and innovative, alternative treatments for patients with constipation due to dyssynergic defecation. Constipation affects at least four million Americans, predominantly women and the elderly. It is poorly characterized and inadequately treated. At least 50% of patients with chronic constipation exhibit uncoordinated or dyssynergic defecation. In these patients, biofeedback therapy may improve symptoms. This proposal addresses three broad objectives. The first is to determine if biofeedback therapy is effective in the management of dyssynergic defecation, the second is to investigate the efficacy of home-training and the third is to investigate the psychosocial function and quality of life and the impact of treatment on these parameters.
