英文摘要
This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a highly morbid condition with the highest mortality rate among psychiatric disorders. Affecting 1-2% of the female population and 0.1-0.2% of the male population, it is characterized by refusal to maintain a minimally accepted body weight, intense fear of weight gain, and distorted body image. Prolonged malnutrition due to anorexia nervosa has been associated with alterations in endocrine function. Both long- and short-term responses to food intake have been documented, but the nature of these changes has not been well characterized to date. This study will measure meal-induced endocrine responses in persons with anorexia nervosa in the starved, semi-fed, and recovered state. Perception of hunger, satiety, nausea, and anxiety will also be measured before, during and after a test meal at each testing point. These measurements will serve to characterize the effects of starvation on meal-induced hormone changes and to assess whether these changes respond to treatment or are consequences of anorexia nervosa.
