This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Breast ductal lavage (nipple ducts are cannulated with a microcather and lavaged with normal saline to collect breast epithelial ductal cells) has emerged as a potential technique for breast cancer detection. The validity of the procedure is unknown although the procedure is being marketed as an adjuvant to mammography for early breast cancer detection. The specific research question is: What's the sensitivity and specificity of ductal lavage for the diagnosis of atypical hyperplasia and/or breast cancer among women?
