This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. This study will be assessing whether dietary supplementation with omega 3 fatty acid (fish oil) will reduce inflammation in individuals with a high risk profile for cardiovascular disease without an elevation on oxidative stress. Twenty men and women who are healthy but exhibit elevated risk factors for cardiovascular disease will be recruited as participants. Subjects will be randomly assigned to receive fish oil or placebo capsules daily for a 4-month period. Measures of oxidative stress and inflammatory processes will be determined at baseline, 2 and 4 months. In order to accomplish this project, the GCRC will be utilized for screening and endpoint mesurement visits. The GCRC GC/MS laboratory will be required for determination of 8-iso PGF2a, a measure of oxidative stress.
