CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS OF BODY CELL MASS AND METABOLIC CHANGES IN HIV INFECTION

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. This study will be a descriptive pilot study investigating changes in body composition and resting energy metabolism in HIV-infected individuals who have been prescribed testosterone (or similar) therapy. The primary focus will be to validate field techniques for quantifying changes in body cell mass (BCM) and REE, with particular attention to investigating the validity of several published single-frequency bioelectrical impedance analysis equations and a promising alternative method called bioimpedance spectroscopy.
