This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. We are interested in the metabolic effects of altered mitochondrial function in the human brain, which may occur with utilization of supplements such as creatine. Oral creatine has been used for many years as a dietary supplement primarily for athletic training; however considerable evidence has accumulated that it may also favorably affect cerebral function (for example, it has been shown to improve cognitive performance). In this project, it is proposed that healthy subjects and epilepsy patients will be studied while on creatine supplementation.
