DEPOT MEDROXYPROGESTERONE ACETATE AND BONE MINERAL DENSITY IN ADOLESCENTS

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. In our previous study, we found that depot medroxyprogesterone acetate was associated with loss in bone mineral density in adolescent girls. From feedback of reviewers at the NIH to a competing renewal application, we deduce that any data that would give us information about the response of bone in girls who discontinue the method would be helpful in our demonstrating the importance of our examining the prospect of recovery of bone in these girls in our next funding cycle. Therefore, the objective of this study is to recruit the 9 girls identified in our previous studies, specifically those who dropped >5% in bone mineral density at the spine and who are not currently receiving the drug, for a repeat DEXA (dual energy absorptiometry) test. The purpose is to compare the current DEXA result with those that were obtained in the previous study.
