This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. In this final year of funding (2/1/05-1/31/06) of the first 5-year cycle, the administrative core has focused on making an effective transition to the next competing cycle expected to start on 2/1/06. We have recruited two new external junior faculty members for the next cycle (W. Muller and S. Paul). They have come on board during this spring. We selected two additional junior PIs after an internal competition (H. Shi and X. Zhao). A portion of the core budget was used to enable these PIs to initiate their COBRE-related research during year 05 so that they can have a head-start for smooth transition to the next cycle when they will serve as junior PIs. Our core has also spent a considerable amount of effort in establishing a fully functional research center called Biomedical Research and Integrative NeuroImaging (BRaIN Imaging) Center in a new comprehensive neuroimaging building that was dedicated on 6/2/05. As of the time of this report all the core facilities (MRI, EPR, MEG/EEG, Optical/ Electrophysiology, Cellular and Molecular (C/M), and Surgery) have moved from previously separated laboratory sites to the new building and they are all being used for COBRE projects by the new and old junior PIs as well senior members of the BRaIN. We have also recruited a new associate director of the C/M core (R. Poddar). As reported in the subproject sections, we have been successful in expanding the number of externally funded research grants. We have already started planning for a center grant that will replace our COBRE grant during the next funding cycle. Budgetary notes: The budget for the administrative core is rather high (63%) because of the costs associated with the recruitment of four new junior faculty members and with the support of their research during this transition period.
