This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The long-term goal of this project is to positively influence the development of, and risk for, overweight/obesity in school-aged children and adolescents through participation in a school-based physical activity intervention. This longitudinal study is planned to be ongoing from September 2005 through May 2009. Faculty/staff and students (grades 3-12) from two predominantly American Indian school communities were recruited to participate in a physical activity intervention during the 2005-2006 academic year. The specific aims of the project are: 1) to determine the efficacy of a school-based physical activity intervention at positively influencing Body Mass Index (BMI) in school-aged children and faculty/staff; and 2) to determine the efficacy of a school-based physical activity intervention at increasing daily participation in physical activity in school-aged children and faculty/staff.
