UKY DENTAL COBRE: ADMINISTRATIVE AND EDUCATIONAL CORE

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The Administrative/Educational Core of the CBBO/SD has facilitated the research and training goals of the COBRE during this initial funding period by: (1) To schedule and organize meetings for the CBBO/SD participants; (2) To organize meetings of the Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC); (3) To provide fiscal administration and accounting; (4) To interface with institutional administration in new faculty recruitment; (5) To oversee the funding of new pilot projects; (6) To interface and provide appropriate reporting to the NIH and other regulatory agencies; (7) To sponsor and organize research career development and training opportunities; and, (8) To provide outcomes assessment of the CBBO/SD. During this year, the A/E Core has initiated a monthly seminar series in collaboration with the College of Dentistry and the regional chapter of the American Association for Dental Research. This has enabled invited speakers monthly beginning Nov. 2004. We have hired a full-time Administrative Officer to manage the COBRE grant, as well as working with investigators across the College of Dentistry to enhance grant submission and the quality of grants management. We have organized a review of both the YIP/OHP (pilot) Grants by the SAC, as well as a replacement project for Project #3 that was funded via an R01. The A/E Core is also developing a solicitation for a second round of YIP/OHP and currently hast 3 new junior faculty preparing applications for these pilot grants. The A/E Core has also developed with the junior investigators and mentors, tools for assessment of needs and expectations relative to the maturation of the investigators as academic faculty. These tools have been administered to obtain initial information from the group, so as to provide yearly monitoring of changing needs. The A/E Core has also begun work with the UK K30 award group to develop training and career development opportunities with shared resources and interacting groups of faculty and fellows, particularly as related to clinical research and faculty development.
