Overview Drs. Gregory Talavera (Associate Professor, Co-Director at BACH and Director for SD EXPORT Training Core and Hispanic Community Health Study in San Diego), Dr. Gallo (Assistant Professor, SDSU/UCSD Joint Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology; Co-Director at SDSU BACH, Co-investigator for Hispanic Community Health Study in San Diego), Patricia Quintana (Investigator and Manager, SYHC Research Center), and Matthew Allison (Assistant Professor, Family and Preventive Medicine) are the Principal Investigators of this, Partnership. Drs. Talavera and Gallo are Co-Principal Investigators at SDSU. Dr. Quintana is Principal Investigator at SYHC. Dr. Matthew Allison is Principal Investigator at UCSD. Drs. Talavera and Gallo have established a successful relationship as co-directors of the Center for Behavioral and Community Health Studies (BACH), working together on applied research in health disparities in community settings. Dr. Talavera has engaged in an extensive collaboration with the UCSD School of Medicine and serves as Associate Physician at the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine at UCSD. For six years he worked with UCSD investigators on the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) to help with the recruitment of 800 Hispanic women. Dr. Matthew Allison, Assistant Professor for Family and Preventive Medicine at UCSD, was an outcomes adjudicator for the WHI and continues his role in the WHI extension study. Dr. Quintana serves as the SYHC Research Center Manager and has spent several years collaborating with SDSU investigators in research studies that take place at the SYHC. Together, Drs. Talavera, Gallo, Allison, and Quintana will collaborate in the recently awarded Hispanic Community Health Study in San Diego, in which they will conduct a six-year epidemiological study. The authority and expertise that these four individuals hold within their institutions and within the community will assure the integration and success of the proposed, mutually beneficial university/community partnership. In addition, they have the support of excellent faculty, major investigators, healthcare providers, educators and patient advocates in the university and in the community. These partners bring the necessary expertise, commitment and resources that will ensure the success of the San Diego Latino Center of Excellence.
