The support services for clinical research are described together because they share resources and personnel and operate in an integrated manner to achieve common objectives. Clinical research at CHOP will be organized largely through the Clinical Core. This Core provides. the infrastructure for patient management enabling the recruitment of subjects for specific projects in particular, the inter-Center collaborative clinical studies. The Clinical Core is staffed by hematologists, research nurses, social worker, psychologist, psychiatrist, genetic counselor, data coordinator, and administrative support staff. They will be responsible for education, recruitment, and enrollment of study subjects. In addition, they will coordinate the scheduling of subject visits, clinical monitoring of study subjects, data collection, communication with the Statistical and Data Management Center, and all other required procedures to enable the smooth conduct of approved clinical studies. Several members of the Clinical Core staff will also serve the patient care Services Core of the Center. These activities will include the Educational, Diagnostic, counseling, and Community Outreach programs of the Center. In many cases these services will be performed in collaboration with other services available in the home institution or in the community. The Center will continue to offer its regional and national Professional (Continuing) Education program at the major national sickle cell conferences.
