DESCRIPTION (provided by applicant): Unplugged and Media Savvy This study will develop and test the feasibility of Unplugged and Media Savvy, a multi-level intervention to reduce sedentary behavior and minimize the impact of media promotion of foods. The project will focus on policy, environmental and behavioral changes to reduce the use of TV, video games and computer entertainment by individual children, families and schools. This study will include student and family media literacy curricula to build skills for critical assessment of food advertising and reduce purchases of highly advertised, energy dense foods. The intervention will bring together five innovative initiatives, (1) 30 Days Live!, a program in which students journal as they give up television for a month as a class, (2) a media literacy curriculum based on a teacher-driven developmental model derived from previous work with other children's health issues, (3) family education based on family goals for student f the project we conduct focus groups with teachers and families and interviews with school administrators to explore intervention themes, and develop classroom and family curriculum using an iterative process with successive work groups of teachers and parents. We will also work with administrators to develop model school policies. In year two we work with five intervention schools from diverse school districts to test the feasibility of each of the components of the intervention. We will train and support teachers so that they can implement the classroom curricula, mail six Unplugged kits to each family during the school year, and work with administrators and parent groups to implement the school-wide components of Unplugged and Media Savvy. We will collect both quantitative and qualitative process outcome data to monitor the integrity of the implementation and evaluation. We will compare student outcomes in five fourth and fifth grade classrooms in intervention schools with five mude change in student and family expectations, self efficacy, and behavioral capacity. We will also measure hours of physical activity and student and family purchases of highly advertised foods. The results of this feasibility study will be used to plan a randomized factorial trial with a large number of schools. Unplugged Project Narrative Unplugged and Media Savvy is a school-based intervention to reduce sedentary behavior and minimize intake of highly advertised energy dense foods. This multilevel initiative will promote changes in policies and environments for individual children, families and schools and develop media literacy skills.
