Core C will serve as the Mitochondrial Function Core of the Program Project. Dr. Bai will serve as the Leader of Core C. Core C will be responsible for the following functions in the Program Project: 1. To provide tools and analytic approachesto study mitochondrial biogenesis including mitochondria! DMA content, mitochondrial RNA level, mitochondrial protein synthesis and respiratory complex assembly, and help to quantitatively detect the mitochondrial DMAmutations for all of the principal investigators of the program project who require such analysesfor the proposed studies. 2. To provide tools and approachesto analyze mitochondrialfunction including measuring total respiration, complex-dependent respiration, growth capacitywhile cells predominantly rely on mitochondria for ATP production and ATP level, and to perform respiratory enzymesassays and create mitochondrial DNA-less cell models for the principal investigators of the program projectwho require such analysesfor the proposed studies. 3. To provide consultation regarding the availability of existing and new approachesto study mitochondrial biogenesis and function to the participants of this program project and to insure the quality of relevant research conducted by the Projects and Cores.
