Dr. Burke has been principal investigator on our Core Grant since 1985. She has directed the Cell Culture Module since her arrival at this institution in 1982 and the morphology facility both prior to and after its designation as a Core Module in 1992. (Morphology Module leadership was assumed by Dr. Link during this budget cycle.) Dr. Burke is a member of the graduate faculty and in that capacity she mentors graduate students and postdoctoral fellows and contributes to medical and graduate teaching programs. She is also on the teaching faculty of an NIH-supported K30 Clinical Research Scholars Program which has a goal of helping junior faculty become successful clinical and/or translational researchers. In addition to laboratory studies funded by the NEI, Dr. Burke has collaborated for several years with the clinical faculty in the retina section. She and members of her lab meet monthly with the clinicians and other retina researchers to discuss research questions of common interest. Since Dr. Burke's work is multidisciplinary, she is a major user of most of the Core modules. The Cell Culture Module maintains several types of ocular and nonocular cells, which provide the biological material for her studies. Many assays performed for her research make use of instrumentation available in the Molecular Biology- Biochemistry Module and most studies also have a morphologic component requiring the services or equipment in the Morphology Module. Additionally, some of her work is conducted using a transgenic mouse model, which requires use of the Animal Resource Module. She is an extensive user of the Image Analysis Module by virtue of her need for confocal imaging and as the primary user of our live cell imaging system. Dr. Burke served as Executive Vice President of ARVO from 1992 to 1997. In that capacity, she served on the ARVO Board of Trustees and chaired the ARVO Program Committee, which is responsible for abstract review and organization of the scientific program for the ARVO Annual Meeting. This experience exposed her to the full breadth of vision research, making her sympathetic to the needs of scientists working outside her area and receptive to modifying the Core Modules to assure that they continue to meet the needs of as many investigators as possible.
