This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
The major hypothesis of the research proposal is that selective expression of Tat in NPCs may alter the proliferation, differentiation and survival of NPCs in the CNS, which may lead to neurocognitive dysfunction, similar to HIV-1-mediated HAD. The following aims will be performed to test the hypothesis: 1) To establish a mouse model of selective expression of HIV-1 Tat protein in NPCs, and to study the effect of Tat expression on NPC proliferation, differentiation and survival. 2) To study and validate the effects of Tat expression in NPCs on neurocognitive function (dysfunction) in the transgenic mouse model recapitulating HIV-1-mediated HAD.
