DEVELOPMENT OF CELL-BASED ASSAYS FOR RICIN AND ABRIN TOXINS

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Functional toxins elicit cellular responses (e.g. apoptosis) that can be measured by flow cytometry. We will be developing cell-based assays to confirm the presence of functional toxin in complex samples. We will identify cell lines with quick response and high sensitivity to Ricin and Abrin toxins. Because samples may contain non-toxin ingredients that trigger similar cellular responses, specific neutralizing antibodies will be used as controls. In the presence of specific antibodies that neutralize toxin functions, measured cellular response will decrease or will become undetectable.
