This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. A commercial Kirkpatrick-Baez (KB) mirror system from Xradia Inc. is installed on BL6-2 in a virtual source configuration. Sub-micrometer focusing for XAS imaging is obtained using two Rh coated adjustable KB mirrors in a crossed geometry for vertical and horizontal focusing, each with a self-contained bending mechanism to set the desired surface figure. The optics is enclosed in a He atmosphere, reducing absorption and scatter. A high precision slit aperture mounted downstream of the first vertically focusing KB mirror enables setting the intercepted beam size of the optics, and allows trading focused flux for spot size by probing different areas and locations of the mirror surface. Beam sizes range from 2 x 2 to 15 x 15 (horz x vert micrometer^2). Work continued on approaches of sample cooling.
